When was the best time to be on Facebook as a business? You could argue realistically, it was between 2008-2011, as that would give you the best opportunity to organically grow a following and loyal customer base. Of course if you missed that window, you're wondering when the second best time is... And that is now! Major changes were made to Facebook in the Autumn of 2017, which meant that even though existing businesses and organisations had built up a following, it could all count for nothing. The algorithm (filtering process) what Facebook use to determine who sees what posts, suddenly became a lot harder for businesses and all indications point to it getting even harder in the future. What this means is, even if you have a following of 10,000 people on Facebook and you post content, it doesn't mean your following sees that post. What will happen is that Facebook will show your post to a very small number of your followers; let's say 50 people. Then based on the reactions and engagements of those 50, Facebook makes a determination on whether it shows it to anymore people. Therefore meaning, unless your post is very engaging, not many people will see it. However, Facebook will allow you to show your content and posts to any of those 10,000 followers and even more than that, they will allow you to show to anyone on Facebook, BUT, you now need to pay for the privilege. Facebook now realise that with over 43m people in the UK on the Facebook audience network, they have a large amount of our potential customers on their network. So, if we want access to them, we have to pay Facebook via adverts. This may sound like a huge change in policy, but realistically, it was always going to happen and was just a matter of time. After all, Facebook is a business too!
